there needed to be social codes to maintain racial divisions within a geographically integrated society--water fountains, schools, restaurants, etc were individually or internally segregated, but in-town commercial areas weren't
But those are now gone and many of the cultural codes are also gone.  Yes, there are still racists in the south, but they are the vast exception.
    •  Right, but the legacy remains. (3+ / 0-)

So you have self-segregated neighborhoods right on top of each other instead of places like Corbin, KY, which at the turn of the millennium reportedly still had under 30 African-Americans in the census count because it had been a sundown town and the local racists were working to keep things that way.

There are some racists just about anywhere, but in the south they are far more likely to have the 'they are less than me, but they can do my yardwork' worldview instead of the 'they are less than me, our town/state/nation needs to make them leave' worldview (with the exception of the current immigration issues, which have a different dynamic). The older ones grew up under Jim Crow, and the younger ones learned it from them.

And I'm saying that as a white woman who grew up in the south in a school district where the on-level classes were racially integrated but the honors track was almost entirely white and Asian, the Confederate battle flag was still part of the state flag, and various roads and neighborhoods were named after plantation-era landmarks that hadn't been there since the sharecropper era or even Reconstruction.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.

Honestly, I have lived and worked in Texas my whole life, traveled around the South as well as many other places, and I have found the South to be less racists than other places in many way.  The progress, even since the 1980s has been incredible.
I think some people here want to make Southerns out to be racists hicks since they don't typically share the same political views.
        •  I wasn't talking about number of racists, (0+ / 0-)

but rather the nature of the ones that are present.

A lot of what I saw growing up was casual 'well our parents lived that way so why shouldn't we?' lack of self-examination, the result of a few racist people in powerful places, or white people misunderstanding self-defensive strategies as 'reverse racism' and overreacting without trying to figure out what the core cause was.

There aren't many vocal and active racists present in much of the south, but they are vocal and active enough to keep the bad name going even when other areas are functionally worse.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.

        •  Tell that to my son, who spent his first year in (0+ / 0-)

college at the university of Georgia (long story).  He wanted to date an African American woman and was told by all of his friends that they would never speak to him again if he did.
