Category Killers. How many family-owned hardware stores are still around, or T.V. retailers ? I wish more small business people would understand this, they would all be Liberals. Government sets the rules for business. Conservatives set rules that favor big businesses over small ones. There's only so much consumer demand out there and every dollar spent in a Big Box is a dollar not spent in a family business. Family businesses, family farms, union wages; they're all part of the American Dream and they've all been decimated by Republican governments.

The free market is not the solution, the free market is the problem.

has been the mantra. What happens when there's no more room for growth?

Most small businesses now that are "making it" are doing things that the Big Boxes can't, many in service industries where a good local reputation keeps people coming to your restaurant or repair shop or accounting office or family farm. Most U.S. manufacturing companies that provided decently-paid jobs have been gobbled up or outsourced.

It's a shame. When the nation's money is held by the banks and plutocrats, or sucked into the bottomless big-box pit, there's nothing left for independent businesses and the people they employ.
