  •  Sequester? (7+ / 0-)

Depending on who you listen to, this is either the end of the world or a good first step.
Either way, it's a manufactured crisis and can easily be prevented (if that is desirable). It's a law, it was voted for, it can be repealed by the same House that voted it in. Crisis averted.
At first, I cheered the sequester and was thankful that he GOP's dysfunction allowed it to go forward. My reasoning was that this is an historic first. The first time the Defense Budget has been axed along with other programs. Usually, Defense has been absolutely sacred, we'll sacrifice childhood nutrition programs before we'll cut a dime from a defense contractor. So this would set a precedent.
Along with it, there is acknowledged pain. Cuts to a lot of programs that help people that are struggling, but I figured that those cuts would subsequently be restored when the effects became known.
Unfortunately for that scenario, the Election brought worse Republicans into Congress, weakened them without prying their grip off of the levers. They can and will still block the programs that I'd want to protect while protecting the programs I'd most like to see cut.
Also too, spending of all forms is what is keeping our economy in the (admittedly weak) recovery. Cutting defense spending would put my state, Connecticut, in a very bad pinch since Guns&Bombs are what we do. What is needed right now is MORE spending, not less.
What we spend ON is where we need to have the debate.
So I ask Congressman Grayson to take two tracks here: Repeal the sequester and replace it with a menu of spending adjustments that takes money from Defense to spend on other, more stimulative programs (Defense is one of the least efficient stimulii in the long run).
And to formulate an aggressive stimulus package that shifts the balance toward programs that help us recover and grow into the next phase, whatever that will be.
But I still want to see the Pentagon cuts happen even if only for a short time, just to establish the precedent.

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!
