  •  Most multiplex theaters don't even attempt (6+ / 0-)

to enforce patrons staying for another showing or drifting into a neighboring screen for an impromptu double feature.  Once you're in, you're in, at least in my town.  But for most people, a few hours is enough and they move on to other parts of their day without any prompting.

    •  For a while, ours wasn't even checking tickets. (5+ / 0-)

Granted, it's a small-town but multi-screen theater and the least expensive popcorn is more than the most expensive ticket last I checked, so it's the concessions they are actually making their money on, but still.

Which is actually a point about theaters in general - the real money is traditionally in the concessions. The tickets traditionally pay for the film and maybe the facility costs. Technically they probably get more profit off someone who pays for one ticket and sees two films but gets popcorn and a drink than they get off me who pays for one ticket and sees one film but usually skips the concessions entirely.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.

Half the time they don't even have anyone taking the tickets....except on Friday nights when movies are oprning or at midnight showings. And at midnight showings, they're pretty good abou letting people bring in coffee from outside, which they don't sell at the concessiopn stand (they now sell WHite Castle, so the tolerance of bringing in burgers for people who get there at 9 pm for midnight shows may be at an end--I haven't done that since the first half of  Deadly Hallows).
