and this whole thing is insane.

Obama threatened to veto a bill without triggers/sequestration.  And now the White House is issuing a slew of statements, all tailored to specific states, about how horrible it would be if the cuts go through.  They took the time to sort out the impact on each state and when scanning the news this morning, I saw that the things they specified for Pennsylvania sorted themselves into the local news section on Google News.

Imagine all the good this White House could do if they decided to use the kind of power they have been using for the past couple of days to inform the American people on various issues.  They have enormous control over the media when they choose to use it.  Suppose they decided to hold the banksters accountable.  It would take a week or less to have the public demanding criminal investigations on Wall Street execs.  Imagine if they decided to do a real mortgage fraud task force.  Imagine if they decided to convince the country that a massive WPA type work program was needed and used their megaphone to sell that.  Imagine if they decided to hold the corporations accountable with their record breaking profits. Big Oil.  Climate change and a massive energy conservation program, alternative energy program.

I wish they'd focus less on empire and more on taking care of things at home and becoming a true force for good.

    •  See Thomas Frank's quote on "Lincoln" (5+ / 0-)
To a modern-day Washington grandee, what assembling a team of rivals means is that glorious thing: an election with virtually no consequences. No one is sentenced to political exile because he or she was on the wrong side; the presidency changes hands, but all the players still get a seat at the table.

The only ones left out of this warm, bipartisan circle of friendship are the voters, who wake up one fine day to discover that what they thought they'd rejected wasn't rejected in the least. And all in the name of Abraham Lincoln. Thanks for that Abe.
      Harper's February 2013

He is describing Andrea Mitchell talking about "Team of Rivals" the book on which the movie "Lincoln" was based. She praises  the book and how it influenced Obama.
    •  they completely control the media... (4+ / 0-)

i watched the first segment of up with chris hayes sunday and i had to close the window in disgust.  hayes had a panel of talking heads chattering and nattering about how the press was cut out of a photo op with tiger woods and what that meant for press access.  there was absolutely no mention of who else obama was golfing with or what it means for the press to be cut out when obama is golfing with wealthy donors with an agenda that may cause "game over" with the climate.

what a bunch of useless ninnies our press are!

toes the line sometimes.  You have to wonder if he was told to nix any commentary on the oil guys in that story.  Most of the traditional media blacked it out.

I also heard him saying that the sequester is not just the White House's fault because Congress voted for it.

Best of all, there was a woman in one of those segments from Center for American Progress, (I think that was her employer) and it looked like her whole reason for being there was to defend Obama and she would jump in and stop the conversation if anything negative was said.  Amazing.  Watchers are put on the show, or that's how it looked.  Keeping things in line.
