    a Devil's Bargain.
They got the result they wanted in 2010, bit by 2012 it was gone, and now they're getting sucked down by it.

Tobacco is dying as a product in the United States (and is sickly in western Europe).  So the tobacco industry has basically given up and is focusing on developing countries, a much larger and less regulated market.

    •  no, not at all! (6+ / 0-)

by getting their folks into not just congress, but state legislatures and governor's mansions across the country in the election just before redistricting, they've been able to use redistricting to likely lock in their House majority for the decade, and can terrorize states from Wisconsin to North Carolina with their craziness while blocking the federal government from doing just about anything.

      •  exactly. just ask a Californian (8+ / 0-)

California is a perfect example of how a small rightwing minority can rig the system to dominate the will of the majority for decades, trashing all government functions for the public good, and protecting corporate interests.

As this expose has documented, there's a much bigger picture here. Dismissing and ridiculing the radical right because the teaparty is on the wane is fun but is a dangerous attitude to hold. It's like saying that the puppetmaster's career is over because one of his puppets has broken.
