  •  Ron Paul's small group of activists (5+ / 0-)

held tea party events in 2007 and 2008, and many of those activists helped organize new tea party events in 2009 and 2010.

The Paul/Bircher meme that the federal government is illegitimate, especially with Democrats in control, remains an essential part of the tea party message.

Fox "News" and talk radio heavily promoted the new tea party, so the "movement" attracted conservatives who live in that misinformation bubble, gun nuts, forced birthers, birthers, neo-Confederates, Christianists, racists, etc., along with the Paul/Birchers.

And Koch front groups (Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks) helped organize that motley crew of wingnuts into a political force that created a wave election in 2010 -- in the House and in many state executive and legislative races.

The wave went the other way in 2012, but the tea partiers and their funders will not give up.

A public option for health insurance is a national priority.
