    One thing that has perplexed me recently is why autism advocates (typically parents of the autistic) tend be Republicans and tend be such a powerful political force.

    If you remember, Elizabeth Emken, Senator Feinstein's sad-sack Republican challenger held a high position in Autism Speaks.

    I found an explanation from a now-old article: for an unknown reason there is a highly significant correlation between wealth and prevalence of autism.

    It also explains why all the disability organizations are goo-goo for the ABLE Act, a bill that would create tax-free savings accounts for the families of the disabled. Naturally, that kind of law is useless for poor families. But since autism families are typically wealthy that is of no concern to them.

    So there you have it. Autism - a disability that even free-market Republicans can love.
