A couple of years ago I took a trip to the Pacific Northwest which included a day trip to Mt. Rainier. While there I took a Ranger-led hike. Of the 33 glaciers on the mountain, 26 of them are in retreat. The terminus of the Nisqually, one of the more prominent glaciers in the park, has retreated over a mile during the past 80 years. Reduction in the mass and area of the glacier is even more dramatic.

The ranger also explained how they can see the ecology of the mountain changing due to warming. Every year, plants and animals adapted to certain temperature ranges migrate a little further up in elevation. More and more they find things living where they don’t ‘belong.’ What becomes apparent is that the limits to adaptation are pretty stark. Plants and animals can’t live off of rocks so migrating in elevation past the treeline means extinction.

but have never made the trip from Arkansas.  Partly time and partly money - and partly I have trouble traveling (can't fly at all and long car trips mess up my knees).  Sometime in the next 5 years I'm going to retire and then we shall see if I can manage the money since I'll have the time.
