The only problem I have with thinking that the Republican Party is about to self-destruct in 2014 in imitation of the decline of the Whigs and the rise of the Know-Nothings in 1854 is that when Franklin Pierce won the election of 1852 everybody thought the tensions of the period had subsided.

Nobody thinks that 2012 did anything like that. I'm still rooting for a free-standing Tea Party to take votes from the Republicans to the left of them and elect Democrats in the few swing districts that remain on the election map, but I think that's in the area of dreaming.

    •  its often misunderstood about redistricting (5+ / 0-)

If you look through history the party that wins during a census cycle and goes through major redistricting efforts often ends up getting bitten in the ass from it.

We are a mobile nation, people move and move often. Demographics shift and can shift fast.

Give that plus the incoming latino voter wave, I don't know. I think the GOP is going to finding themselves to wander the wilderness while they try to cling to the last bastion of power they have in the states.

And even then, Latino's are more engaged than most typical voters. Many are not your low information voters and are often plugged in locally more than nationally at times. That doesn't bode well for what we would typically consider GOP strongholds in the south west like AZ, NM, and TX.

Will it happen by 2014, prolly not. But unless the GOP rights this ship, its going to run aground earliest 2018, latest 2022 at which point we will see a centrist moderate majority in power for quite some time.

Now, one could argue that in and of itself isn't necessarily a good thing either.
