  •  WTF does (11+ / 0-)

anyone take them seriously any more?
Their first try failed to get support even from a stacked commission, and they have even less public support now (especially when people find out what they're actually proposing).

They count more than us, all the people that would have to try live in our golden years under their plan. Why? Just because. It's Washington. That's why.

so they can't be all that bad, right?

You may think that. I couldn't possibly comment.-- Francis Urqhart

Weakening Social Security will force people to put more money into IRAs, 401K's etc.  This will make money for Wall St.  It will also force people to work longer and result in a labor surplus which will create a downward pressure on wages. With respect to Medicare, forcing people to pay more for their medical care or to pay for their own medical care until a later age will save money for the government and allow us to continue our ridiculous military expenditures for longer.  These savings will also allow US administrations to delay a real medical care restructuring (i.e. single payer) that would genuinely reduce medical care costs.  If your goal is for the maximum long term benefit for the American people, the various Simpson/Bowles proposals make no sense.  If your goal is to maximize transferral of wealth from the working classes to the oligarchs, they make more sense.  In terms of news coverage, I suspect some newspeople are willing accomplices while others are just intellectual lightweights.
