  •  Not entirely true (5+ / 0-)

You must have been in some alternate universe Tucson if you found it so bad. It's one of the saner areas of the state. How else can you explain a city council and mayor that is 100% Democratic? Yes, we had a problem with the school board caving to the state superintendent of education about Mexican American Studies in the district, but that was only because they couldn't afford to lose a significant portion of their funding. Please explain what you find objectionable about Tucson and its residents.

    •  Actually yes. (0+ / 0-)

I have extended family in the Tucson area, have spent a few years there also out at Marana.  I also have family in Scottsdale. I like a lot of things about Arizona but the level of open hatred of anything not WASP in the two metro areas I mentioned is something that I found to be quite astonishing.   Yes Tucson is probably the most progressive town in AZ, but you cannot tell me there are not still a boatload of ignorant racist folks in that town simply for the fact that I KNOW some of them and have been around them in person there, on more occasions than I care to remember. I have spent years of my life in Arizona, in Yuma and Tuscon so it is not like I am throwing rocks from afar. Indeed if the level of crazy and stupid was not so high I would not hesitate to move there once again.

Bread and circuses for the public.... Has worked perfectly for 2000 years to keep the great numbers of those with little power, ignoring those tiny few that have almost all of it.

      •  Pima County is not the same as Tucson (0+ / 0-)

I will agree that there are a lot of right wing wackos in Pima County outside of Tucson city limits. They tend to plop their manufactured homes on their half acres of land, get a couple of pit bulls and live in their little paranoid worlds. The NW area of Pima Co near Marana is a prime location for these types, and they usually hate the City of Tucson (and its residents) so much that they would never think of living within city limits. Yes, there are doubtless a number of racists within city limits, but those attitudes do not predominate.
One further thing: my husband has extended family in Nebraska, and we've heard some pretty racist things from them. I do think that many folks are less guarded about their true feelings when they feel safe among family and friends.
