was the time-tested result of PROPAGANDA.

The people in question listen to talk radio endlessly and run Fox News all day long. All they hear are the misinformation, the CT's, and the mocking - the mocking is probably the most powerful of all - against the other side.

The right-wing noise machine is a master at its craft, and its craft is propaganda. I know otherwise rational people who viscerally HATE President Obama...and even if you spent the hours to refute any and every reason they gave for hating him, they'd still hate him. They don't need to know why they hate him, they just they HATED Bill Clinton.

It's propaganda, plain and simple. Humans are very susceptible to it.

Here's the good news: propaganda has to continually go further to keep poking the anger buttons. The people already in the loop become numb, and sensational seems mundane to them, so further and further go the claims and the screeches...

That heightened lunacy satisfies much of the base, but makes it much harder to recruit. And also, if someone happens to get away from the nuttery for a short while, he/she is more likely to have an epiphany and wake the f*** up.

The demographics work against them. Hate has a shelf life - the question, though, is how much damage it can do before it withers.

Propaganda always has a purpose, and the purpose is to mislead. Occupy has been shining a spotlight on the man behind the curtain: the 1%ers who are the actual funders and movers behind the Tea Party. They want you to believe that liburrls and Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama are behind all of your current economic woes as well as tarring them with being on the other side of all your cultural, racial and class prejudices. And the result is that people vote directly against their economic interests.
