  •  "Hannibal" (9+ / 0-)

Here's the preview for Bryan Fuller's "Hannibal" for NBC. It is intended to be a prequel to Thomas Harris' novel Red Dragon (the first Harris novel to feature Hannibal Lecter).

The series follows FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) as he investigates difficult serial killer cases, eventually deciding to enlist the help of the world-renowned psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen).

    From Ain't It Cool News:

In six weeks it takes over NBC’s old Thursday “ER” slot, which has become a place where new series go to die.
I have my doubts as to whether this is going to work as a weekly TV series (especially a weekly TV series on network television). Plus, after all of the additions, sequels, and adaptions of the various Lecter stories (e.g. there are two big budget adaptions of Red Dragon), how much of the Lecter psyche is there left to explore? And is there enough material to stretch over 22 episodes for multiple seasons?

Speaking of the adaptions of Red Dragon, I'm a big fan of Michael Mann's 'Manhunter,' and like it a bit better than 'The Silence of the Lambs.' Part of the reason for that is that I find Brian Cox's performance as "Hannibal Lecktor" more interesting than Anthony Hopkins' Lecter.

Both iterations of the character play with FBI agents the way a cat plays with a mouse, but Hopkins always comes across as extremely intelligent but nuts, even on the surface. Hopkins' Lecter revels in his insanity. Cox plays Lecktor as a man who's extremely intelligent, but has a sinister nature just below the surface that he doesn't believe is wrong or even a problem. Instead of reveling in insanity, Cox's Lecktor rejects that he's insane.
