  •  I also had fish when growing up (3+ / 0-)

My mother purchased a little 5 gallon tank and stocked it with a variety of tropical, fresh water fish. My sister and I spent many, many hours watching the tank. We were particularly amazed by the baby fish produced by the live bearing mollies and swordfish.

Later we got a pair of Siamese fighting fish and loved watching the male build a nest and court the female. Never had babies, but the male did collect the eggs from the female and placed them in the nest.

During high school I had a somewhat larger tank that I invested a lot of time maintaining and enjoying.

Sometimes I think about getting another tank. It's been a long time now since I had the pleasure of just sitting and watching my fish. I think the last time I kept tropical fish was a little over forty years ago.

    The Discus really is beautiful.

    •  Keeping fish is a real wonder in Possum Valley. (3+ / 0-)

We have tried and given up much the same as you describe.  Today at work we have a large tank maintained by a commercial service.  The fish are wonderful to watch.  The whole event of maintaining an aquatic environment is so very restful and pleasant to see.  But too difficult for this marsupial.

Thanks for sharing your story.  Keep coming back for more of knucklehead's fine pictures.
