My green card application was much more expensive and time consuming than the naturalization process.

As far as humiliating goes, I still remember the psychiatric evaluation, during which the doctor assumed that I didn't speak English. I was wondering if he was trying to find out what it took for me to lose my temper.

When I finally got out of there, the expensively-dressed Japanese lady that had been ahead of me (I had noticed her because she was so well put together) was waiting for me outside. She wanted to know if the shrink had treated me the same way he had treated her. I assured her, yes, white as I am, I was still subjected to the same ordeal.
