We got our son in China in 99, and applied for citizenship papers. The law changed while we waited for an appointment, so we were able to get his passport just with the adoption documents. He even got a green card in an amazing two weeks after arriving, and I used to pull it out in Chinese restaurants and joking that he was eligible for a job! We had to surrender the green card when he got citizenship.

I remember the Green Card, and making the same joke!

We,,  however, had to get Ecuadorian passports for our children, exit papers from Ecuador for them, and a U.S. Visa for entry to get them home.

Green card came just about as fast ....

But it was ~18 months later that they became citizens - a process we started after we finished the adoptions here in Massachusetts (which means they can get certified birth certificates from MA instead of Ecuador).
