When Ontario first passed their same sex marriage bill in 2003, several provinces and territories and assorted politicians huffed and puffed and made a ton of noise about invoking the Notwithstanding Clause, or simply opposing the bill, or whatever, if the federal government tried to "impose" it on them.

When Parliament officially made same-sex the law of the land two years later, 8 of the ten provinces and the Yukon had already put laws on their books, leaving only Alberta, the NWT, and Nunavut. Oh, the ranting and raving of the politicians and the promises of the lawsuits, and the Conservative Party screaming in opposition, and Ralph Klein (premier of Alberta) wanting a national referendum, and then the bill passed and...

..a whole lotta nuthin. Dead issue. the Conservatives won the election the next year and didn't even try to touch it. No serious politician in their right mind, regardless of how right wing, would bother putting it in as a plank in their platform anymore. Settled and done.

Looking back on it, you see the standard situation: one or two jurisdictions tentatively pass legislation, there's outrage, court cases, and then in a remarkably short period of time you look up and realize the battle is over and hey, you won.
