The main alternative to nuclear power will be natural gas.  A gas-fired combined-cycle combustion turbine can be installed relatively quickly and cheaply compared to coal and nuke.  The project cost estimates and construction schedule are more predictable for gas than coal and nuke.

Natural gas will be the majority of our new "base load" generation, with renewables providing an increasing percentage of the balance.

I'm quite familiar with all of the negative impacts of fracking for natural gas.  However, it is by far a cleaner fuel than coal or uranium.  And by running gas turbines in the "combined cycle", we are able to capture the explosive energy of the fuel and the thermal energy.  Coal and nuke only capture a portion of the thermal energy.
