    ...but you'd think the Peak Oilers would have faced reality by now.

      Peak oil isn't all the oil running out, it's when the amount of oil output hits a peak, which generally is a plateau.  The development of more expensive oil deposits is exactly in line with the predictions of peak oil theory.  I haven't seen anything to support the idea that peak oil is a century away except that the industry swears it is.  If you look at where we're drilling you'll see how close we are.

      That said, there are a lot of doom and gloom predictions about peak oil that are terribly overwrought and needlessly apocalyptic.  Mostly based around the misperception that peak oil is necessarily a dramatic drop in production.

        would LOVE for us to believe that there's many decades', or even a few centuries' worth, of fossil fuels left(though ironically enough, just a few decades ago, they were pulling the opposite gambit!)...even though  they really ARE liable to run out well before the end of the century.
