    •  But seriously (3+ / 0-)

these shows helped women, gays, civil rights, you name it. I'll always love sitcoms for that sort of popular influence.

Roseanne showed what was really happening to the 99% 20 years before most of us caught on.

Because of Roseanne's muscle this cast locked the suits out of micro-managing of their production. A much earlier, similarly great cast, was ignored by their suits and they produced the cartoon shorts known as Looney Tunes.

I'll share my story of Roseanne Barr with you, but privately.

Will and Grace can't be forgotten. All in the Family for crying out loud. The Jeffersons, Maude. Even Three's Company gave something to the zeitgeist.

Leave it to Beaver did us no favor except for the potential of full on mockery.

The writing was good, the show was well cast, the actors had good chemistry, I could easily imagine our family being in situations like the ones they found themselves in, and it showed (for the first time, as far as I can tell) two fat people at the head of a TV family having a loving, caring, sexual relationship without it being the butt of a joke.

          •  It lost it's way at the end definitely... (3+ / 0-)

The winning the lottery bit, the Roseanne writing a story and not real life - that was terrible stuff.  But the first 7-8 seasons was top notch stuff, a sitcom with heart and a message.  It ranks right up there with All in the Family for me as one of the true greats.

I still remember an episode of All In The Family where Archie Bunker is at the local watering hole unloading to one of his friends, a former NFL player, about how homosexuals have no place in professional sports.

The friends listens for a while, then looks right at Archie and tells him point blank, "Archie? I'm gay."

        Stunned silence, followed by "Naaaaaah."

And this back in the early 70s when such things were barely on the horizon, much less on the ballot or in general discourse.
