    winter in your area -- we didn't get much in New England.  My friend lives in Chevy Chase and was miserable with all the shoveling.  I've told him every year to get a damned snow blower and generator but his girlfriend (who doesn't shovel and whines about power outages) doesn't want them cluttering the garage.  Jeebus.

      Of course, it helped that I live in the District in a rowhouse that rarely loses power, in one of the more walkable neighborhoods in the city, with an underground Metro stop nearby.

      Everyone was off work, the bars were open, I got to shovel snow and use all my winter gear that usually ends up taking up space in a plastic tub, there were spontaneous snowball fights, and I could get around town without too much difficulty... it was a great time to live in the city.

      Folks from the suburbs who lost power for a week had quite a different experience of it, though...
