I lived in Central Pa (where Penn State is) and we didn't see the ground between Thanksgiving and almost Easter.  We lived on a big corner lot with VEEEERRRRY long sidewalks that the town made us keep shoveled (otherwise our excetble landlady would get a ticket).  I was doing my dissertation that winter and working almost full- time as a research asst., so that my wife, besides taking care of two wacko young boys and doing seamstress work at home, had to do most of the shoveling.  She was, understandably, not a happy camper, eventually suffering from near terminal cabin fever for what seemed like many months.  It just seemed to never stop snowing.
