  •  at her salary, she'd make too much if full time (4+ / 0-)

the cut off for food stamps is INCREDIBLY low...especially if she counts as a single person.
It's higher if you are disabled (like myself) and still I barely squeeked in.

My guess is that that cutoof is somewhere UNDER 1000 dollars a month for a single person to be on food stamps.

    •  Probably varies state to state. (2+ / 0-)

I made $600ish a month awhile back while in graduate school and checked into it to see if I would qualify. Even without scholarships/loans factored in, I wouldn't. Partially due to assets maybe though.

      •  at some point the requirements loosened a bit (0+ / 0-)

I think during the second Bush admin.

Since it is a federal program I'm not sure why it'd vary by state. Though it is true I live in a generous state around these things, MA, the people I interacted with to get foodstamps were unlike people I dealt with around healthcare and other similar "help" (fuel assistance).  They were not in general generous or helpful.

Food stamp people were eager to get you to not be eligible, it seemed to had a "prove it" mentality. In the interview the person actually seemed to try to trip me up with dates I last worked etc. I am an educated person who's good with documenting what I need to and I STILL was refused another time even though I was in fact eligible (eligibility requirements are posted online and there is a tool you can use...I had no other income or reason outside of that). Second time, I went through a manager and got it but no data had changed.
