View Diary: Three quarters of Americans are not Republicans (109 comments)

I've been waiting for the GOP to implode - for all the well known reasons.  Ruy Teixeira's Emerging Democratic Majority was the first cogent argument for this and it just seems truer over time.

But the GOP never seems to implode.  Part of this is the Democratic Party's seeming inability to press its advantage, and part of it is the fact that the GOP still has the upper hand on austerity and still manages to convince a majority of Americans that the national debt is the biggest problem facing the country... despite the fact that they are the chief authors of that debt, and despite the fact that the public prefers Democratic ideas on reducing the debt.

But maybe now it's actually happening?  I keep thinking that they will change course on issues where they are going to lose.  For example, the best favor the Roberts Court could do for the GOP is simply to issue a wide decision in favor of marriage equality and take the issue out of the political process so the GOP stops losing voters over it.

I think the real wedge issues are on issues like immigration, where the base won't let them change.  It's hard to see how they can gain any credibility on that at all and not self-destruct.  I think they cannot recover as long as they are stuck trying to undo the New Deal...  changes that took place a full and long lifetime ago.  I just hope the collapse is broad and wide, and forces a new alignment rather than incremental.

    •  Don't forget the GOP has one huge advantage (10+ / 0-)

that the Democrats don't: a lavishly-funded 24/7/365 multi-media propaganda machine courtesy of FoxNews and Rush Limbaugh, along with a host of lesser sociopaths and wingnut ranters on radio and TV, all enabled by a thoroughly useless and hopelessly corrupt "mainstream media" that is mindlessly devoted to false equivalency narratives.

In other words, the playing field ain't level.

the drug addled gasbag but more and more people are seeing them for what they are.  faux ratings are down, the anal cyst poster boy has lost so many advertisers that clear channel has to subsidize his show, and fewer people are identifying as rethuglicans.  that being said, they have rigged the local vote and it will be hard to overcome that.  if all things were equal, they would be in the dustbin of history.  it could happen even now.
