    and my administrator heard of it (I can refer to guidance if I think it's an extreme situation in lieu of a punishment), I would be disciplined and written up, so whether it's a "big deal" depends on more than the teacher. It depends on what we expect from our teachers. At worst, though, I have a kid stand up if he/she is falling asleep. Sometimes I send them to the clinic to nap if they have legitimate reasons.

      as a student in my old high school and later as a long term sub there,  they allowed the teachers to run the classrooms as they chose and gave them a lot of leeway. Contrast that with a neighboring school district where the principal was tough with teacher expectations and he was stricter. So much depends on the administration and its policy and enforcement.
