  •  Bernardin was a genuinely good man (14+ / 0-)

He probably should be considered for canonization, but of course he won't because in so many ways he was socially liberal.

What really enrages me is how the Archdiocese of New York is promoting the canonization effort for Dorothy Day.  I personally think that Dorothy Day and the Berrigans are as close to saints as the Catholic Church produced in the 20th century, but Cardinal Egan is promoting Day specifically as an anti-abortion saint, not for her pacifism or her concern for social justice.  Worse, he's doing so in direct defiance not only of Day's express wishes, but those of her daughter and grandchildren, NONE of whom wish this to go forward.

It's awful, and I hope they don't succeed in turning a vital, passionate, brilliant woman into a faceless symbol.

Dorothy Day will turn the tables on Egan's attempt to hijack her legacy and hijack him right back. Day is a giant next to someone like Egan.

Canonization will spread her Catholic Worker message far and wide and Egan will find himself with Saint Dorothy's boot up his ass.

      That makes me smile.  BIG.
