light bird shot if you are the shy retiring type that does not want to inflict death for any reason. (Or you could be the sadistic type who wants an intruder to feel the pain for a long time.)

...though most packs enough force to get through a wall, and Dick Cheney's buddy aside it can still prove fatal, especially at the close ranges you're likely to encounter in a self-defense situation.

But I don't agree with using rock salt. I'm a strong believer in the Four Rules of Gun Safety, and rock salt shells can lead people to ignore the second rule: Never point a gun at anything you aren't willing to destroy.

The idea that your shot won't kill someone can lead to thinking it's okay to fire in situations where it really isn't (someone trying to attack you with a weapon = yes; someone trying to break into your parked car to steal your stereo = no). And even though rock salt probably won't even break the skin, you're still not likely to be in a situation where you can be justified in using that level of force but not deadly force. A gun aimed at a person should never, never be fired unless you are willing to kill that person.

be aimed unless you intend to kill that person. Aiming is assault. You don't have to wait for the bullet. If someone aims at someone but is killed in self-defense without the gun ever having been fired, that is still self-defense. The target has a reasonable expectation his/her life is at stake.

And in some states, defense of property DOES allow lethal force, though I wouldn't want to argue killing over a car stereo in court.
