  •  And this! (7+ / 0-)

    I can relate to.

I generally go by my abbreviated name and most everyone who knows me uses that. (Except my mom, who, since she gave birth to me, can call me whatever she wants.) For the most part, the only other people who use my full name don't know me. Either name is fine with me, really.

Sometimes, though, when I first meet someone, they insist on knowing my full name.

"Xyz can't be your real name. What is it?"

    I say, "It's Xyzzzz."

They say, "Why XyzYYY is such a pretty name! Why don't you go by that?" XyzYYY is a similar, more commonly used name than mine.

Me, "Because, Xyzyyy isn't MY name. As I said my name is Xyzzzz."

Five minutes later, and for the rest of our time spent together, they will call me XyzYYY.

THIS is why I don't go by Xyzzzz, assholes!

And now you know that I am Czech, as my name has no vowels.

      Oh, I feel your pain.

I frequently have people ask me why I don't go by two more common variants of my name. Well, BECAUSE THAT IS NOT MY NAME, thanks very much.

Worse, the two "substitute names" are not even the common nickname for my name (which I used as a kid, didn't use for a long time, and now use again).  It's not like my name is very complicated. It's only has one syllable! Augh!
