  •  What is wrong with Kansans? (7+ / 0-)

We drove through Kansas one time.  We enjoyed it, but I did not know the off-the-wall people that you write about here.

It is as if they never, ever have any contact with exactly what is happening in America.  It sounds like no one reads,  or learns.  Just repeats old racist, bigoted crap they probably hear from each other, or at a racist, bigoted meeting.

I think they are afraid of the modern world.  And fear is what is pushing them.  Not all Kansans are like that.  They can't be or I am worried about them.

    •  This however is the wrong narrative (23+ / 0-)

And it's what concerns me most.   Kansas is a state where Kathleen Sebellius was governor.  We've elected democrats.. recently.

When you look at areas of the state, outside of District1 (Far western Kansas) it's actually not as out of reach as it seems.   Lawrence, Kansas is very progressive, and even Manhattan, KS.. while more conservative is a light year ahead of western kansas.   Overland Park and KC is fairly moderate.

So, what happens?   Well, there are a few things that happen.

Voter turnout in most of our districts is low.. much lower than many other states.   Why is that?  Because Democrats have absolutely no reason to turn up; they believe the state is in the bag before it starts.  In the last elections, Democratic house candidates spent about $100k in all four races.   Four house races where dems put in nothing and two of those races they didn't even have a candidate on the ballot.

Kansas is a state where the right pushes could divide and split the conservatives, and a liberal (yes, liberal) candidate could motivate people to turn out and vote.

But the problem is that we are a state that runs absolutely no one.  And so the mantra for democrats here is "why bother voting, the state is lost anyway".

This mentality is a killer; how we over come that I'm not sure.   But it's definitely worth taking some swings at it.

      •  That's why a 50-state national policy for the DNC (19+ / 0-)

        is absolutely urgent.

Kansas could easily elect a couple Democrats to Congress and move ahead more in the legislature.

But there is precious little help organizing and money coming into the state.  It is utterly wrong for the DCCC, the DNC, and the DSCC to write off the state (and lots of other states) like that.  A little money, some email lists, some local organizing and GOTV would go a long way.

As they are showing, these Republicans are truly rePUGnant.  A solid Democratic candidate could make a lot of headway with these nutcases as opponents.

        •  It's nearly the same here in Oklahoma (8+ / 0-)

The feeling that, as a democrat, you are on an island surrounded by well armed bible-thumping sharks is dare I say typical.
Standing in line to vote this past November there were plenty of people voicing conservative opinions out loud. It was rather sickening.  The few bastions of liberal veins running through the state can't compete with the onslaught from the right, who speaks to their constituents constantly from the local media to the preacher's pulpit.
I'm afraid this prolonged knee-jerk reaction over Obama's first victory, now followed by a (God forbid!) second term, has hardened their hearts and sent their pea-pickin' grey matter into an absolute chaotic frenzy.
Only the complete failure of state government and the realization that Hussein Obama's black zombie hoard will never arrive to devour their churches and eat their high caliber bullets but are indeed an insidious myth made by those that have now ruined what was once a great place will bring them back from Never-Ever Land. Sigh...

          •  A good friend joked "Democrats in the Closet" (3+ / 0-)

That there are real concerns about coming out as a democrat in some communities to the level that they hide it at almost all cost.

            But, that can change.

      •  Sebellius was elected because she ran against (3+ / 0-)

a toxic waste dump. The next toxic waste dump to run for KS Gov was Brownback and he won handily. We had Moore in the house - went in as a member of the progressive caucus and retired as co-chair of the blue dogs. Nobody even challenged Yoder last November. I've lived in JoCo for 24 years, after a lifetime in California and 5 years in VA. Today the same career offer would not seem as enticing, and this is no longer a place I would choose to raise a family. Meanness has risen to the surface. I hear it in my neighbors' comments, in the market, everywhere. Kansas is depressing!

        •  I know the feeling (0+ / 0-)

On the other hand, as population changes, etc. things may be different.

Good thing in some ways for Kansas is that Google's test market in Wyandotte is bringing in businesses.. including a lot of out-of-staters and out of state investment.

All we need is a push here and there, some changes..

You're right, Sebellius came in after a disaster.   I think the same case can be made against Brownback coming up
