  •  Well then ... go Teabaggers! (7+ / 0-)

Hard to imagine myself thinking this, but there you go.

And when it happens enough, we may just get some reasonable people into office. One can hope, anyway!

When Claire McCaskill looked vulnerable they took out a stand during the Republican Primaries to highlight Akin as the 'true conservative' candidate, an through the Republican primaries into a free-for all.  If the Republican presumptive had won the primary, there would have been no Akin flub, no national story, and she might have lost (likely).

Same here; all we need is the right lunatic to come through and challenge Roberts.

And, by the looks of it, that's becoming more and more likely

      •  I have to disagree (0+ / 0-)

I appreciate this diary, and ideally a wingnut like Huelskamp beating Roberts in a primary would lead to a solid Dem pickup chance, however I have a hard time believing a Dem could win. As I have stated in other comments, there is no "moderate" faction of the KS GOP anymore - they are all right-wing kooks now. The moderates used to vote for the Dem if the wingnut won the primary, but that doesn't happen now. As I have said to my Dem friends in Kansas who think the moderates are tiring of the fringe nuts running the state and will vote Dem next time, "what do you think these so-called 'moderates' do when they get behind the voting booth curtain?" They simply will not vote (D) now, Obama has driven them crazy. Thus, as bad as Roberts is, if Heulskamp beats him in a primary, Timmy will be the next senator from Kansas.

Further, I think the comparison with Missouri and Claire is inapposite. Missouri, though trending Puke, still has a large Dem voting base and everybody knew Claire. Further, Akin's comments were a liability in Missouri; in Kansas, I fear that they would have been an asset to him. Kansas has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1932, and even if Krazy Kris Kobach or some other virulent wingnut were the Puke's nominee, he would win. Kansas is a right-wing cesspool, and there are no "moderates" left to help turn the tide. In short, the loonies have won - they have converted the entire base into wingnuts.

That having lived in Kansas my whole life, on many points, you're right.   There is a lot of backwards Kansas.

That said, this is also the state that elected the likes of Dennis Moore.  Nancy Boyda.  Kathleen Sebellius.   And several democratic governors.

In local and regional elections, voter turnout in Kansas has been depressed far below the national average.  In large part because there is no one for them to vote for and most throw in the towel before the election begins.

I know, I've worked the campaigns and ran the numbers for several candidates.

If you're convinced it's never going to get better, then it's hard to work to make it that way.   Kansas is going to be an uphill battle, I'm not denying that.   But I can't "give up" on the concept of making a dent here.   Too many good people who need real services do live here.   Surrendering and just saying "it's not worth trying to win" doesn't gain anything for them or those that need it.

So, you fight the good fight, every inch of the way.
