But did he get his Home Loan by going through the VA?

Though it might be too late if he didn't you might try this VA Home Loan Guaranty and especially if his disabilities keep him from most jobs employment. Or maybe to refinance through his now bank or another on better terms.

He could also visit his local VA regional office or if to far away from try and find a local VA office, funded with help by the State usually. Trouble with that most states cut back funding a long time back, even before the economic collapse, while in the early days of these two present wars. So they may be there still but with fewer Vet Advocates working in them.

Another would be, again through local or regional veterans offices would be to see about housing options or even private veterans advocates groups who might be able to help or point the family in a positive direction, like subsidized apartments or houses.

If he did get the home loan with VA help the bank should have that in their records and if so some of what was forgiven would have been paid by the government.

I've always known it was there, and it's been upgraded someone, if I ever needed or wanted to use, as a veteran, but I've never owned always rented. Too damn much physical  work done daily in the construction trades to have to come home and do home upkeep though some I wouldn't have minded. So I really don't know the depth of the program.
