  •  Never understood abstinence only (3+ / 0-)

Last I checked the human race had a few primal urges...ones that have served us pretty well for thousands of years.

At least 9,000 years, according to some on the right wing.

    •  Abstinence Only doesn't even work for asexuals. (3+ / 0-)

If you've got the urges, you get framed as horrible for wanting to use them.

If you haven't got the urges, you're 'immature' and left wondering if you're broken because you've just heard how hard you're supposed to be fighting against doing something you have no intention of ever doing. Or, if you're a woman, you feel pretty good about yourself up until the point it stops being 'purity' to the local churches and starts being 'refuses to comply with God's plan for you to be a wife and mother' and potential evidence of lesbianism.

There is no place in Abstinence Only for someone to choice abstinence of their own free will after reviewing data. Consent doesn't enter into it, you're just supposed to obey what an authority figure said because AUTHORITY and have no intellectual defense against anyone who has rejected that authority.

No one wins. Abstinence plus at least usually has a path to chosing abstinence of your free will instead of under the command of someone else.

Prayers and best wishes to those in Japan.

      •  Perhaps the most important thing this group (2+ / 0-)

could accomplish is to encourage everyone to not be bound by other's judgements. Most everyone has, thinks about, or wants sex one way or the other. How each person pursues that should be their own choice (anything non-consentual excluded).

I've always thought of the subject in this vein: my neo-con, Roman Catholic father would probably not approve of a lot of things....but he's not in my bedroom. He's not my concern when I'm with my wife, so what he thinks is right and wrong doesn't mean much to me on the subject.
