  •  I ran the Colorado River (3+ / 0-)

Summer before last I was lucky enough to be included in a private raft trip down the Colorado River.  My friends had first put in for a permit in 1999, and finally were rewarded with a permit in 2011.  We did the 225 miles between Lee's Ferry and Diamond Creek in 16 days, 7 of us in 4 oar-powered rafts.  I had never experienced such a vast wilderness before.  I think people just think Grand Canyon, right, got it.  But to actually experience hundreds of miles of canyon wilderness...  it is Grand....It is inimitable. This is an experience that changes a person.

Carol in San Antonio, and I am you posted your memoirs as such. You get the point of what Powell and his men partially realized on their dow-rivers excursion. Imagine not knowing if there really was a huge falls that Powell was warned about, and once over its threshold. . .you know. Anyway, as it turns out, the Indian who told him of such peril was right: there is a major falls, many of them in fact, but the one he had in mind happened to be either Havasu or Mooney, each many miles off the main corridor. Still, the men never quite knew what to expect around each bend of the river. Glad you got to experience running 'the Grand.' It is truly like no other canyon country in the world. 16 days worth is also a slow and leisurely pace, so I am thinking you folks got to see and explore many idyllic places along the way. Like Silver Grotto??? Perhaps even Havasu Canyon?

Treat the world (yourself, and others) as part of a living organism. Everyone and everything will benefit.
