  •  wyvern, I live in Mississippi (6+ / 0-)

and I can explain it in part. The conservatives believe that the difference in outcomes here is because the poor are dependent on the government. If you cut off all support they would rise up and be responsible and get jobs and get married and find Jesus. The statistics in Massachusetts are irrelevant because they don't have to deal with the  lazy poor people we do (so the thinking goes). The statistics about poverty, infant mortality, obesity, food stamps, welfare, all prove their point (in their warped world view). As conservatives they work hard and take care of their own against tremendous odds. If they can do it, anyone can. If we as a state are taking more from the Feds than we are giving, it is because of the lazy shiftless among us. If the poor would quit sitting around drinking malt liquor and waiting for their checks, we would be among the richest states in the union, but what can you do? It is racist; it is degrading; it is delusional. But it is how they see the world

..all I would add is nobody in Mississippi is going to take a comparison to Massachusetts seriously, because Massachusetts is full of yankee sneaks who use unions & liberal-leaning citizens to scam the system.

In other words, not only are the poor in Mississippi working a scam, literally everybody in Massachusetts is working a scam.

And yes.  The fact their whole political viewpoint is based on nothing but scams is an irony they'll never get.
