  •  For many people, The Different is a threat. (11+ / 0-)

The questions it raises are disturbing.

"Why would anyone do anything differently than me/my tribe?  Do they think they're better than me/us?  Is there something they know that I/we don't?  What are they up to?  Are they getting away with something?  Am I being tricked or fooled or deceived?  People aren't supposed to do/be like that; what is wrong with them?"

Ever witnessed a Caucasian get all freaked out & paranoid just because two brown people are speaking Spanish in their earshot?  Ever had that Caucasian say to you, "I bet they're talking about me/us.  Who knows what they're saying about us?"  It's quite an experience, maintaining a straight face in that situation.  It's the kind of thing that is hard to believe until you're there.

I don't think things would be as bad as they are if we didn't have a huge political-media operation dedicated to fanning the flames of fear in order to create a culture in which they can get away with most of their terrible selfish agenda.  Why the wingnuts can't stand sociocultural diversity is an important question, but almost second to the acceptance that this is the way things always have been, & still are.  The Millenials may be the most accepting & pro-diversity generation yet, but they have dissenters in their ranks, who might yet foster a backlash in the generation currently in infancy.  Even though we've made a lot of progress, I think humanity is still vulnerable to ancient tribal Stranger Danger impulses that can be triggered by people who are perceived to be dangerous because of their differences.

Sometimes I can't believe it; I'm movin' past the feelin'...
