    I appreciate that the notion of "states rights" has in the past been used to justify all manner of awful policies and laws enacted by states that are/were in conflict with the prevailing federal statutes. However nostalgic it may soon become as a result of these efforts by R governors and their cronies in state legislatures in order to further balkanize the US electorate, I think a convincing case can still be made-- evne to republicans-- that states should speak with one voice with regard to the only truly national election our country holds-- that of the Chief Executive.

      ...choose to return to the pre-Civil War usage (The United States are...) instead of the current usage (The United States is...)
