  •  Proposed fracking bill in IL has enviro support. (2+ / 0-)

The big statewide environmental groups are supporting a fracking regulation bill in Illinois that's also supported by industry. Trying to get lobbyists on all sides to agree is how things usually get done in Illinois, so this is not unusual.

Enviro orgs may have trouble convincing the grass roots to go along. First, because "no fracking is safe fracking" has become a common slogan among environmentalists. Also, most fracking will take place in Southern Illinois whose residents weren't directly represented by the Chicago-based green groups. All the big environmental groups have members in Southern Illinois, but as with other statewide progressive organizations, residents are used to being an afterthought of Chicago-based leaders. Fracking will be overseen by the notoriously industry-friendly IL Office of Mining and Minerals, which is already too understaffed and underfunded to monitor the coal mines they pretend to watch.
