Seriously, I personally believe that the outcomes of the 2014 and 2016 elections, much more depend upon whether the Dems go along with draconian cuts to the social insurance programs.

The reality is, the number of folks receiving rental vouchers (for instance), which is usually quoted at 125,000, couldn't possibly affect the outcome of an election.

But the current over 55 million Social Security beneficiaries, along with the gradually retiring 76 million Boomer soon-to-be beneficiaries (which doesn't include the succeeding generations who will ALL be affected if Social Security and Medicare benefits are slashed) DO HAVE REAL ELECTORAL POWER.

THIS is the constituency that the Dems (or Repubs) need to be worried about as they conduct the ongoing fiscal negotiations.

I also consider most of what we're watching to be simply 'more Kabuki.'

Either way, truth-be-told, there is no actual crises that occurs this Friday, if an agreement is not reached.

Even all the Dems on the Sunday Political Talk Shows, admitted as much.

Chances are, though, that this will end up like the negotiations this past December--with a last minute "deal."

[And, if that fails, the PtB are betting on whipping up enough hysteria, so that when they do make deep cuts to the social programs, the American People will be so grateful that the US avoided another recession, that they will continue to be easily mollified, by having a few crumbs occasionally thrown their way.]

And this is what's really depressing, IMHO.
