he sequester involves trimming $85 billion from a $3.6 trillion annual federal budget, or about 2.4 percent. But the cuts will not affect Social Security or Medicaid, and the Medicare cuts total only about $11 billion in the 2013 fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, according to calculations by the Bipartisan Policy Center.
That's about half the budget right there, add in things that cannot be touched legally or practically, all of these cuts have to be dealt with in less than a quarter of the total budget.

that was a point I was trying to make.  They want the rest of America to have a come to Jesus moment here...if you cut 2.4% from the budget, but leave entitlements's what you get.

The Dems will aid them in that narrative by making sure that the cuts that are made and publicized are the most popular things out there.

And if, on the other hand, virtually all of the growth in the Federal budget is for programs like Medicare and Social Security and other such programs...that, in turn, does change the conversation.

Most Americans, I would bet, think that federal spending is fueled by bridges to nowhere and farm subsidies and $100,000 grants to PHD candidates to study the incidence of homosexuality among bullfrogs in Louisiana wetlands.  What if it's not?  How does that change the conversation?

      Oregon:'s cold. But it's a damp cold.
