  •  Consequences of Section 5 being overturned (12+ / 0-)

Five steps to suppressing minority votes:

    1. Pass a government-issued Voter ID law "We have to prevent voter fraud. This isn't a poll tax.  You can get an ID for free at the DMV!"

    2. Close DMV offices in minority neighborhoods. "We have to balance our budget!"

    3. Remove or change bus routes from minority neighborhoods to DMV offices in the suburbs. "But we have to contain costs!"

    4. After a suitable period of time, start charging $50 for a government-issued ID.  "There is that budget thingie again!"

After the NAACP and the ACLU bring suit under Section 2 of the VRA, the case takes three years to work through the courts before the laws are overturned.

    5. Run through steps 1 to 4 again, with a slight variation.

    Rinse and repeat ad infinitum.

      to Section 5.

Put only two poll workers in all the poor and black precincts, while 20 in the white burbs twiddle their thumbs all day.

Only the old, broken down voting machines, too.

And damn, we had no idea the turnout would be so high.  We ran out of ballots.  Here's what you do:  take a cab to another precinct and have them call me on your cell phone so I can authorize you to vote there.  Don't have cab fare?  Don't have a cell phone?  Don't understand English?  Than why are you voting again?
