    Otherwise there wouldn't be 80,000 people failing background checks -- those are all people who tried to buy through a registered dealer, but flunked.

    Of course we don't know how many of them later were able to buy in an unregulated "private sale." As I understand it, it's the fairgrounds/gun show/private sale loophole that the Obama Administration is trying to close.  People are likely to still do it, but at least it won't be legal, and if the police see someone do it, they can arrest them.

      I know of a situation where metal thieves tried to steal unused railway track under the justification it was unclaimed not-in-use public property (um no, they're private) and therefore for the taking of whoever got there with a toolbox first.

      Or at least that's what they calmly told the officer who caught them after they already had part of it in the back of the truck. With a straight face. Because what they were doing wasn't wrong, right?

      Clueless criminals will always be with us.
