As one who was born and raised in Iowa -- and I still consider myself to be an Iowan -- my state's politics sometimes make me wonder.  On the one hand, we vote in Tom Harkin, who has been a wonderful senator.  On the other hand, we vote in Charles Grassley and Steve King.  I just don't get it.

However, I do support King on one point:  his "English Only" bill.  He is spot on with this, because I think that anyone who enjoys the benefits -- such as they are -- of this country should be willing and able to speak this country's language.  In my research on the subject, I have not been able to find any evidence that the Europeans who came to this country ever had convenience signs in their languages in the general areas of cities, towns, etc.  They jumped in with both feet and learned English.  But they had the will and intellect to do so.  English is not an easy language to learn, but yet those Finns, Russians, Poles, French, etc. got the job done.  Apparently Steve King is aware of this -- while a lot of "political correct" people are not -- and feels -- quite properly, in my opinion -- that immigrants who choose to live here should learn this country's language.  Amen to that!

    •  This country has no official language. (0+ / 0-)

The majority of the people here speak English, but it has no official status. And I can only suppose you've never been to any old ethnic neighborhoods if you think there's never been signs posted in other languages.

      Cogito, ergo Democrata.

Initially, yes, America was a set of English-speaking colonies. But the USA has been multilingual for a long time. My home town is about 50% Hispanic. I don't feel like telling that part of the population to speak my language, anymore than I'd like them compelling me to speak Spanish (although I do speak a little and can use that when I need to).

Language is just another dimension of diversity and I think some tolerance for differences is in order.
