I have just discovered that I was once personally acquainted with one of your Montana State Representatives, probably one of the most illustrious of an illustriously unwholesome bunch: James  Knox. I knew him from when we were both in diapers until, I don't know, about sixteen.

It's incredible, what he has become. He hasn't changed one iota since childhood. He was BORN to be a bagger. He never was very smart. OTOH, he's not stupid either. He was always very verbal (talked nonstop, but didn't give a hot damn about the language), very cagy, full of spite, and a 1st-class conniver. As a little kid he was a notorious tattletale; a real ratfink. Loved to spoil the fun--relished it. Took credit when it was actually due elsewhere and dodged rightful blame constantly. As he grew up he became an insouciant, over-confident, unlikable corpulent pain in the ass. Sure looks like a case of Same as it Ever Was. ;)

Anyway. Wow. Kinda blows a perplexing hole in my theories about education, nature vs nurture, etc. As I say, it's clear to me--now that I see it--he was born to this role. To this particular political posture. He's the prototype tea potter; he could be no other thing; he's been becoming it, perfecting it, since he was a lad in short pants. Interestingly, he had a sensitive and gifted sibling who (at least as I knew him 35 years ago) was nothing like him at all.

    God bless our tinfoil hearts.
