  •  GOP can object any given bill based on ideology (5+ / 0-)

But what the GOP never own up to is that when they take ideological stands, there are real-life people who suffer as a result.

By objecting to a few provisions of the VAWA, the GOP allowed the entire bill to expire. Meaning because they didn't want certain groups to get certain protections, their actions effective make it so nobody gets any of the stated protections.

Another example is the movement to drug test welfare applicants. It's one thing to argue that welfare money should not go to drug users (a debatable position under any circumstance). But the fact of the matter is, when you require drug testing of all welfare applicants, you are spending money on drug tests that could actually go toward welfare applicants.

It goes on and on and on. The GOP make these great ideological stands that their base eats up. But they never acknowledge the fact that, unlike the Democrats, their positions create victims of people who are more often than not already victims. I wonder if some of them can look themselves in the mirror each morning.

And I can't find a link anymore, but in a previous diary I read that there was a dozen or so GOP Reps who declared that they would not sign any version of the VAWA.
