    To make cuts.  Borrowing costs are at, and will remain at, all time lows.  

    As long as the US can service its debt, which low interest rates means doing so is very painless, there is no reason for austerity now or in the middle term.

    Long term, if health care costs continue to spiral (which they have started to slow - we'll see what happens), we may have to... raise taxes.  Gasp.
