history knows very well, I've got absolutely no respect for Stephen Lynch.  In fact, I worked hard for his primary opponent in 2010 and I don't think I've ever said anything good about him on Daily Kos ever -- and he's my Congressman.  I don't like the guy, and I never will.  I strongly support Ed Markey for Senate.

That said, I think Lynch is getting a bit of a raw deal on this one.  From the Globe reporting on the incident:

“Blame the staff or blame the e-mail, the request certainly didn’t get to him, because he would have signed the briefs,” said Lynch campaign spokesman Conor Yunits, describing Lynch’s evolution over two decades to become an avowed supporter of same-sex marriage.

Late in the day, a spokesman for US Representative Jerrold Nadler, the New York Democrat who helped organize signatures for the brief, confirmed that Nadler’s office had e-mailed the invitation to a Lynch staff member who apparently no longer works for Lynch.

So Nadler confirms part of Lynch's story, that the email never reached him.  But is the rest of the story plausible, that he would have signed if he had gotten it?  Well, the Globe points out that not only has Lynch voted to repeal DOMA several times, he has actually co-sponsored the repeal legislation.

Finally, I don't think he'd be making such a big deal out of this if he really did still oppose gay marriage.  I mean, this story was front page on the Boston Globe, for chrissakes.    If he was looking for the homophobic vote in the primary, this would absolutely be the wrong way to do it.
