Brazil finally owned up to the fact that their GMO ban was merely an excuse to allow farmers to pirate GMO seed (since the "ban" gave the government the excuse to have no regulations of the thing that did not officially exist). That devil GMO  is such evil stuff that farmers want to steal it.

This is because wind-pollinated crops - like all grains: wheat, rice, oats, barley, etc. - literally throw their pollen to the winds and there's no real control over where it goes.  Even plants that use pollinators like bees are vulnerable, because bees don't restrict themselves to a single farm, especially not since they're trucked all over the country.  It's actually very easy for GMO plants to cross-pollinate with non-GMO plants on neighboring farms, and the resulting hybrids are regarded by Monsanto as "theft": i.e. you have our genes in your plants but you aren't giving us money for them.  Monsanto has an entire division dedicated to running around testing crops for their trademarked genes in a very successful attempt to catch these "thieves", who Monsanto then sues.

What a ridiculous concept. Collecting seeds from one's own grains has been a historical imperative in all of human history. It should be a human right to collect and plant seeds.

The idea that one can claim "intellectual property" over life is an abomination. Especially for crops which pollinate by wind.

        •  No, I am cheering about the GMO ban in Brazil. (0+ / 0-)

People are not really stealing GMO seeds.  Crops have been cross pollinated and contaminated with patented genes so that Monsanto sues for theft when farmers save their own seed.

          •  Not Banned Any More (0+ / 0-)

because the farmers were stealing the seeds and growing them anyway then fraudulently claiming they were GMO free. So now it's not banned, but Brazil is permitting the piracy, but just believe whatever makes you happy.
