How often do we hear ANY nonmarginal figure in what comprises today's Left seriously advocate a return to anything resembling a pre-Reagan tax structure?

How many know or care that the reforms in farmworker pay and treatment accomplished decades ago by the UFW under César Chávez have largely disappeared/been reversed?

As for our heroes, I have great respect for the economic insight of Paul Krugman, but he has said himself that a lot of the policies he advocates for are what used to be the general received wisdom, that he is solidly within what used to be the mainstream of economic thought, not far out on the left.

nonmarginal figures aren't pulling the load, that I can agree with.

But CK's solution is to further marginalize the marginal figures.

the purpose of the second amendment is to promote a well-regulated militia, in the same sense that the purpose of the first amendment is to promote a well-informed electorate.

have on occasion said things I very much agree with. That doesn't buy them a free pass when I don't. Why should it? Besides, in mentioning and quoting them, this diary goes a small way toward making them less marginal, although of course that is not the diary's intent.

The Left has won a very few important victories since my youth. And yet, despite that, the country has gone backward. How many times have you seen the criticism of the current crop of GOP whackjobs that they'd excommunicate Ronald Reagan himself as a RINO if he appeared among them? How sad is it that we can be stymied by a party in which that might well be true? Or that inequality is worse now than it was in his day? Or that for a while now the prospect of kids doing better economically than their parents has been very bleak? Or that "tough on crime" mandatory sentencing laws passed in the Clinton years have given us a prison-industrial complex unmatched in the world? The American Right is (mostly) evil, corrupt, and dependent on rallying the forces of ignorance, prejudice, and stupidity. It MUST say something about the American Left that the Right has had so much success in that.

My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right.
