    is John Varley. An area he explored was gender change for the hell of it, in a future where plastic surgery was so sophisticated you could go from male to female to neuter and/or back to male again as it suited you. Fascinating series of stories exploring the effects of gender-switching. Varley also was the first male writer I ever read who could create believable female characters: menstruation taken for granted; toughness that was not the military, super-hero silliness we usually have to endure, rather the internal variety; male privilege shown frequently as foolish and dangerous. Still love to re-read his stuff.
